	Dental Bridge: Restoring Missing Teeth *Bridges:* Your teeth play an essential role in chewing, digestion and facial structure. Tooth loss is not always due to decay. Many time people were born without certain teeth, or they are simply removed from orthodontics. If you do have missing teeth, the good news is that there are options for filling in the space. Dental bridges are a common way to correct tooth loss. A dental bridge is a fabricated device to replace a missing tooth. It attaches to the adjacent, healthy teeth and has an artificial tooth attached to the device to fill in the space. A dental bridge can either be fabricated with full crowns to attach to the adjacent “abutment” teeth, or fabricated with onlays. Onlays are slightly more conservative and is an option if the adjacent teeth are “virgin” teeth, meaning they have never had a cavity in them. The dental bridge is bonded and cemented in the mouth and cannot be removed. Only a dental professional can remove a fixed bridge. What is the procedure? Like many procedures that involve a dental laboratory, this is a two step process. The first appointment is when dr. Bayne prepares the adjacent teeth so that a artificial tooth can be supported. This requires numbing the area, preparing the teeth and taking an impression. Once the impression is taken, it will be sent to the lab for fabrication. In the meantime, the prepared teeth will have “temporary caps or fillings” placed over them for protection. In two weeks, the new bridge will arrive and will require a second appointment. At that appointment the temporaries will be removed and the new bridge will be cemented and bonded in place. Dr. b will then make any necessary bite adjustments.
