Our goal is to provide dentistry that looks natural and undetectable to the natural eye.  Replacing old, large silver fillings or gold or metal crowns with porcelain is one of our most common procedures. 
Many times we choose porcelain because of its strength  and lifespan.  Most porcelain crowns last up to 20 years. 
What is the procedure of a Porcelain crown?
Preparing the tooth and fabricating a crown is a two step process.  The first step involves Dr. Bayne removing the old failing filling or crown, removing any decay, and contouring the existing tooth.  Often time, the remaining tooth structure will be very limited.  At this point, Dr. Bayne will need to create a ‘build up’ of material so that the new crown has structure to bond to.  After the tooth is prepared, the Doctor and assistant will take an impression of the tooth and send that to the ceramist lab.  In the meantime, the assistant will make a “temporary cap” to protect the newly prepared tooth.
In two to three weeks, the new Porcelain crown will be finished and back in the office.  At this time, we will remove the “temporary cap” and cement and bond the new crown.  Any bite ajustments will also be made at this time.

While any dentist should be able to fabricate a decent gold crown or PFM crown on a back tooth, it is much more difficult to correctly make an all porcelain crown on a front tooth and have it match and blend harmoniously with the adjacent teeth in your smile.  To correctly perform this procedure takes an incredible amount of skill and experience.
Results should look natural, symmetrical, and undetectable.  Additionally, your single crown should be just as healthy as your adjacent teeth, and should last for just as long.
Black or grey lines at the gumline are unacceptable, and contours that don’t blend lead to a crown that looks fake.  Translucency should be consistent throughout the person’s smile, as well as lobing, texture, and color.
