Treatment of Gum Disease
with Periodontal Therapy

Did you know 80% of adults have some form of Periodontal Disease?  That could mean the disease could be affecting one area, or the entire mouth.  Many people, especially if you have waited over a year to have your teeth cleaned, can present symptoms of active periodontal disease.

How is this determined?
Your cleaning appointment will be with our Hygienist, Julie. She will perform a screening on your gums to determine how healthy your mouth really is.  This screening is called taking “Periodontal probing measurements”.  This may sound intimidating, but Julie is very gentle, so the screening is very comfortable.  In fact, most people can barely feel the probing.  The Probing measurements measure the natural pocket that we all have around each tooth.  A healthy pocket is very shallow, meaning she can barely detect the pocket.  However, a periodontal pocket with periodontal disease is deeper because of infection.  Typically, a deep pocket also has bleeding and tartar buildup on the tooth adjacent to the pocket.

What should I do to treat Gum disease?
The Hygienist will recommend doing a very thorough dental cleaning called a “deep cleaning”.  A Deep Cleaning will usually require local anesthesia and typically half the mouth will be cleaned in one appointment, then the other half will be cleaned at a separate appointment. During these “deep cleanings”, the hygienist  will remove all the tartar present, smooth the tooth surface and gently remove any diseased gum tissue.
After the “deep cleaning” is finished, the deep pockets will begin to heal immediately.  To achieve the maximum amount of healing, it is ultimately up to you to keep up with flossing daily and brushing two times per day.
Typically, after the Periodontal Therapy is finished, Dr. Bayne and the hygienist will recommend more frequent cleanings, recare at either three or four month intervals, to prevent reoccurrence of periodontal disease. This is called periodontal maintenance.

Before you leave, don't forget to request in-office whitening.
