	Extractions: Removing Hopeless Teeth *Extractions:* In most cases, the reason to extract a tooth is due to infection. If tooth decay is very deep, many times the doctor will choose to extract the tooth so that the decay and infection does not affect the surrounding teeth and bone. Other times a tooth extraction is needed to prepare for orthodontia or wisdom teeth removal. An extraction is perfomed in one appointment. Once the tooth has been diagnosed as needing extracted, it is most times a fairly simple procedure. The first step is for the Doctor to numb the area with Local Anesthesia. The patient also has the option of using Nitrous Oxide for comfort. Once numbed, the Doctor removes the tooth and then places a bone graft in the area so that the bone will fill in properly. The patient always leaves with post operatory instructions and a prescription for a pain medicine.
