Dental Bonding

Dental Bonding is a minimally invasive or non invasive procedure which utilizes specific dental resins and composites to restore or enhance your smile. Dental bonding has many benefits for the men and women served by Scottsdale dentist Dr. Matthew Bayne, DDS.

More than typical white fillings, which are plain and uniform in color, Scottsdale cosmetic dentist Dr. Matthew Bayne uses a technique called polychromatic blending, which utilizes dental resins of varying translucency, opacities, colors, and brightness levels to more accurately mimic your natural teeth. Skill, training and experience allow Dr. Bayne to stack, layer, and blend these different resins into dental restorations that more closely blend into your smile.

In nature, teeth have varying degrees of color and translucency. Properly recreating this natural look takes time and experience. Notice how, in the example of dental bonding pictured below, the restored teeth have a well blended balance of hue (color), chroma (intensity), and value (brightness), in addition to a fourth element: depth. This adds to the realism, and allows these dental restorations to be very convincing and natural looking, rather than distracting.

Example of dental bonding by Paradise Valley dentist Dr. Matthew Bayne, DDS:

In this case, the dental bonding was completed by Scottsdale Dentist Dr. Bayne in his Paradise Valley dental office in one visit lasting about an hour.
In this case, the dental bonding consisted of three teeth with cervical abfractions at the gumline. No drilling was required. No tooth enamel was removed.
Three layers and colors of composite resin were utilized on each tooth to achieve this natural looking result.
These bonded restorations will serve this person well for many years to come. This person was thrilled to have the sensitive notches at her gumline fixed with an alternative to crowns.
(Note: the gums in the after picture have been blurred to conceal any blood droplets or debris. The teeth themselves are un retouched.)

Key Benefits of Dental Bonding:

1. Immediate results. Most dental bonding procedures can be completed in a single visit.

2. Preservation of tooth enamel. Most dental bonding performed by Dr. Bayne requires very little, if any, drilling or removal of existing tooth enamel. Dental bonding is an additive procedure, rather than destructive or subtractive.

3. Lower cost. Because the materials cost is lower than with dental ceramics, the cost of dental bonding is significantly less than porcelain veneers.

Key Drawbacks:

1. Dental bonding doesn't last as long as dental porcelain. Dental bonding loses its luster and shine faster than dental porcelain.

2. Lower strength. The material itself has some limitations, and is not suitable for all situations.

3. Difficult to mask dark stains. Another material limitation, due to the somewhat translucent nature of the material, is its incomplete masking of dark stains. Other techniques may be more appropriate.
